Q: Which candidate successfully got increased funding for prostate cancer and childhood asthma? Clinton or Obama?
Increased research funding for prostate cancer and childhood asthma at the National Institutes of Health?
I looked it up and it was Hillary. You are right.
A: Clinton
Q: Can childhood asthma come back into adulthood?
So when I was about 7-12, I am rounding/guessing. I just know I had asthma part of my childhood. Well today I went running, and I am wheezing again, also about a week ago I was wheezing for no reason, and then about a day later we had been outside and I was wheezing again. I am now 21, so could have my asthma came back??
A: Yes, asthma can come back later in adulthood, you should talk to your doctor about starting treatment again.
Q: Can I join the military if I was diagnosed with childhood asthma?
I haven't been diagnosed since I was like 6 or 7, and I never used my inhaler once. And if I can't is there some kind of test that I could do that would prove I don't have asthma now?
A: Leave that up to the military to decide. Nobody on YA can give you a definitive answer on this - it will depend on your individual history.
Whatever you do, do NOT conceal anything or lie about ANYTHING when you fill out your forms. If you do, and you are caught (which usually happens, believe it or not), you will get a Dishorable Discharge faster than you can say, "One year in Ft. Leavenworth".
And you just might get that year in Leavenworth, too!
It's called "fraudulent enlistment", and you'll get more severe punishment for it than for punching a 2nd Lieutenant.
Q: 10 years ago I was DQed at MEPS for having Childhood asthma?
Would That prevent my from trying to join the reserves now? I have not had problems with asthma since i was a child and it never affected me in sports, running, or even when exposed to pepper spray or CS gas.
A: Asthma doesn't disqualify you tell your recruiter what you wrote here. He will set you up with the physical and when you go to MEPS they will temporally disqualify you. At this time you will be set up for a Pulmonary Function Tests. This will decide if you have asthma or not. If you don't you can join. You could also speed up the process up by getting one done locally at a DR. office. that way the recruiter could send that up those results first before you take the physical. Good Luck
Q: I guess I need a waiver for childhood asthma, what is the best way to go about obtaining one for ROTC?
I know it is possible to get one so I don't want any of this "its impossible" crap. I'm transferring a better college soon and I will be attending ROTC so I just wanted to know if there is anyone else out there who has had to get a waiver and if there are any tips you might offer. I'm about as physically fit as you can be and I've been a firefighter for two seasons now. Its a good job, but I know the military is for me. Thanks for any helpful info you might offer!
A: See your family doctor and then go to your nearest US Military Recruiter and they will give you the information that you need and all of the necessary forms to fill out. Your family doctor can
provide your medical history to the US Military doctors!!
Q: Is there a way to prove to the military i no longer have childhood asthma and be accepted still?
8 years ago (age 12) I was diagnosed with asthma. Now age 20 I am trying to apply for the coast guard and the recruiter warns this could be an issue despite me not having an asthma attack in YEARS! What action should I take to prove I no longer have it and such!
A: Sure, just go to a doctor and let them confirm you no longer have it.
Q: Forgot to mention childhood asthma at MEPS?
I'm due to leave for Army BCT/AIT soon, but my family recently informed me that I had allergic childhood asthma as a kid. Frankly, I haven't used an inhaler and haven't had any 'attacks' for as long as I can remember, so is it even worth me mentioning this?
A: YES, disclose everything, You don't want to ruin your life with fraudulent enlistment!!!
Q: What's the likelihood of outgrowing childhood asthma?
A: Out growing asthma is a myth. Asthma is an allergy and will be with your most of your life. One classic misunderstanding is body growth. As a child you have small body parts. This includes small airways. When those airway get inflamed and swollen, the airflow is obstructed. As the child grows older and gets bigger, so do the airways. Bigger airways can move more air. Inflamed swollen airways don't obstructed the airflow as much. Symptoms will not be as bad and even unnoticeable. The problem is chronic inflammation can scar the lungs.
Second classic misunderstanding is a child living in one area of the country will have asthma, They may grow up and move across the country to attend college. If the asthma symptoms subside, the perception is they out grew it. In reality its possible they just moved away from their asthma trigger.
Will you out grow asthma? Most likely not. Will you outgrow symptoms? You very well could. Just don't be surprised if you have asthma issues later in life.
Q: Want to join navy but had childhood asthma?
I had child hood asthma. and I recently started the process of joining the navy i went took my asvab and i sent all my medical documents including a letter from my doctor stating its been over 8 years since ive had any asthma troubles or required medicine...and I'm 20....is that gonna be enough to get me in?
A: I believe it is disqualifying if you had Asthma after the age of 13. So as long as all the documents are in, and the MEPs DRs clear you, you should get a waiver.
Good luck bud.
Q: How does childhood Asthma affect Fast Jet Pilots? (RAAF)?
I was prescribed an inhaler when I was 8 years old, never had an attack, and to be honest, I don't think I even had asthma in the first place (I went to the doctor after playing around in an attic full of dust...). Does anyone know the RAAF's stance on childhood 'asthma' when it comes to aircrew?
A: The every branch U.S. military rejects asthma, in fact, if you ever want to get a Marine Corps recruiter off your back tell him you have asthma. End of conversation. The very 1st questionnaire you get when you walk into a recruiting office has a big fat box that says "check here if you have asthma". If you you check that box that's the end of you military career.
I would assume it's the same for RAAF, but if its not really a problem for you then don't even mention it.
Q: How to prevent/control childhood asthma?
A: Check that you child does not have an alergy to household dust or any other respiritory allergies such as flower (ie pollen) dust mites, air fresheners etc. This can be done by elimination and re entry of the alergen to the child's atmosphere as well as your GP's allergy testing. Although not the cause of asthma it may be an extreme irritant. Hoover carpets, floors and mattresses regularly, get frsh air in the home when possible and use air filters in air con and heating units. Remove plants and flowers if pollen allergic. Diet wise check for other irritants and any vitamin deficiencies that may make asthma worse.
Q: Where can I find at least 20 years of stats related to childhood asthma hospitalization?
A: http://www.dhs.ca.gov/ps/deodc/ehib/ehib2/PDF/Hosp%20Chart%20Book%202000.pdf#search='asthma%20in%20hosp%20children' Try there first its a start
Q: Where can I find out about childhood asthma?
A: try webmd.com
Q: Is it possible to join the Navy if you have had a previous childhood condition of Asthma?
A: Yes, if your asthma is no longer present and went away before your 13th birthday. You should go to the doctor who diagnosed you and get him to write a letter stating that your symptoms have been clear for x number of years and you have no restrictions. If there are no complicating factors, MEPS can clear you. If complications arise, they can request your older medical records or that you take a pulmonary function test. If MEPS DQs you, you can apply for a waiver and hope it gets approved.
I had a letter from the diagnosing doctor clearing me of asthma, but MEPS DQd me because of a case of bronchitis in college that they believed was asthma related. I had a comprehensive pulmonary function test done, got a letter from my current doctor saying I had no restrictions, and put in for a waiver, which was approved. It was a lot of work, but I think it was worth it. Good luck!

Marine5, with all due respect, my asthma waiver just came through last week... and mild childhood asthma doesn't even require a waiver.
Q: does second hand smoke effect childhood asthma?
Can once or twice around second hand smoke cause an attack?
A: Absolutely. Even the smell of cigarettes on your clothing could be a trigger factor. Just quit, for your sake, as well as the sake of your child's health. Set a good example. Good luck.
