Q: Asthma Problems, Need advice on treatments not working!!?
I have Asthma and see a Critical Care Lung Specialist. I starting seeing the doctor when i was in the hospital after a surgery i had. They discovered i had Mucus and i had a bronchoscopy about 6 months ago. I didn't have any more problems with my asthma until 5 days ago. I became short of breathe and alot of wheezing and have been getting a high dose of Steriod pills & i got an injection 2 days ago, I take Anti-inflammatories, I use my Advair & i use my Serevent Inhaler & i have my home Nebulizer with 3 treatments a day. I still am wheezing really bad and can't breathe well. I called my doctors office and they will fit me in as a walk in later today. My goodness has anyone else got asthma and gone through all of this? Have you gained weight? What should i expect next if all this isn't working? Can someone with asthma give me some advice on how to deal with the anxiety & depression from it all. Thnx.. If anyone without asthma has advice 2 i would love it to. A Mucos- *I meant a mucos plug in my lung*

A: If you really cannot get your breathing under control at home, please get yourself to the emergency room so that they can give you IV meds, continuous nebulizers nd do a chest x-ray to see if there is something else going on. Do not wait until its too late. I lost a middle aged gentleman tonight due to him waiting too long to come to the ER for his asthma.

Q: What causes asthma? What are some possible problems? What treatments and care can you do?

A: Asthma is caused by chronic inflammation. In it the muscles of the breathing passages contract and this cause breathing problem. This again makes it difficult for air to breath out from lungs. Asthma is not curable but it can be controlled if it is diagnosed early and begins the treatment.

Q: Asthma, oxygen saturation reading off? Also question about Xopenex (and nebulizer treatments in general).?
Hi, I've been having some pretty bad asthma symptoms lately (bad enough where I went into the hospital last night). I was put on Prednisone 40 mg 2X daily. Anyway, my oxygen saturation was fine, and I'm wondering if my over-compensating breathing (i.e. I was trying to make up for my shallow breaths by taking more and taking them as deeply as possible, even though my chest was sore) would have highered it, when, if I had just let myself breathe without physically straining during the attack, it would have let my oxygen levels drop lower? There have also been times when I have a bad attack and my oxygen is close to normal, whereas a mild one is much lower. Could this be caused by my rapid breathing (in a desperate attempt to get more air in)? Lastly, can Xopenex nebulizer treatments cause high blood pressure temporarily (like 120/85)? I'm usually 90/60, but last night my BP was high. Thanks so much!

A: inhalers and nebualizers can raise you blood pressure. they can also make you woozy, and shaky

Q: What causes asthma? What are possible problems? What are some treatments and care?

A: Your bronchioles are overreacting to certain stimuli, like smoke, dust, plant materials in the wind, mold, fungi, or animal dander. Avoiding all that stuff will help, plus seeing a dr and getting prescriptions for things like Proair for emergencies and nose sprays and allergy meds for all the time. Plus if it really got worked up after something big in the past, it will get better as the years go by. Mine did.

Q: Are there any home treatments or over-the-counter medicines that will help asthma?
A long time ago (like ten or so years), I was given an inhaler becaue apparently, I had minor asthma. I was only a kid at the time. But the asthma wasn't a big deal. So I quit using my inhaler. Anyway, it comes back, off and on, and I'm suffering through it now. When it comes back, it lasts anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks before I notice it's gone. I don't know if it could be allergy-related or what, since it comes back and leaves, comes back and leaves. Anyway, It's been affecting me kinda badly the last couple days. But I don't have the money to make a doctor's appointment. Christmas wiped me out. Are there any home treatments or maybe OTC meds I can take?

A: Try hot coffee. Also, you can get Primatine Mist OTC. I wouldn't use it for an extended period of time, but it will help for now.

Q: Do you know about breathing treatments that you can sometimes get when you have a cough, or in my case, asthma
Ok, here is the story. i am 13 and was born with asthma. As a baby, i was sick and miserable. I luckily outgrew it when i was 6 and have never had an asthma problem untill the past few months where i have been sick with colds, coughs, and feavers like crazy along with troble catching my breath during sports. My mom took me to our docter and concluded that my asthma is returning, and now i have to take these annoying breathing treatments again. Anywho, after i take the breathing treatments, i am super hyper and i checked my heart rate multible times and everytime it was at a really fast rate and it is a little painful. after i take a breathing treatment, i have to breath really heavily just so i have enough breath and i feel like my chest will explode (not leterally.) is this supposed to happen?

A: I am 16 and was diagnosed with asthma when I was 6 months old. I know what you are going through. I also know how much it sucks. Try eating a few saltine crackers or something small after you take the breathing treatment. It helps greatly. It is supposed to happen. It happens to me everytime. Good luck and sorry about your asthma coming back.

Q: My doctor said I have asthma, they give me breathing treatments, inhalers but I still wheeze all the time.?

A: stop smoking.

Q: what can be done for a pomeranian with asthma attacks?
i have a 6yr old pomeranian who has recently started having asthma attacks. i was curious if anyone else has dealt with this and what treatments if any helped?

A: has the pom been diagnosed with asthma?a vet would be the one to prescribe medication for it..small dogs have trachea problems too..i would go to the vet..

Q: ASTHMA--who here was helped by homeopathic treatments?
My 7 year old has been sent home from school and has been hospitalized 2x for asthma. I've purchased the berry green prebiotic, the omega 3's, multivitamins, he gets the xopenex and the pulmicort and the occassional antibiotic(at which time I give the yogurt cultures simultaneouly)etc., etc. We also find creative ways of getting healthy meals into him, keep him involved with his peers and sports when he's not sick. I'm just so tired of the regular mainstream medical proceedure for asthma. Has anyone been helped tremendously by any other modality? I want to get the phlegm out of his chest and clear his lungs so he can take in air. It's possible just need help and direction. What has permanently worked for you? Why do you believe strongly in homeopathy or another alternative method? Any websites or supportive groups you can recommend--I'm searching and searching and would greatly appreciate some input. Thank You. Best of health to you and yours!

A: Homeopathy is a worthless scam, because all homeopathic medicines contain no molecules of the active ingredient in the final solution. It relies on the belief that through magic, the water holds on the essence of the active ingredient. I hope you can realized why this is nonsense. Do some critical research into it before you waste your money on it. I'm taking albuterol for fast acting relief and flovent for long term reduction of symptoms, but my asthma was never as bad as your child.

Q: My 4 year old was diagnosed with asthma earlier this year, i'm not sure when to give his breathing treatments?
He is now taking Singulair and Pulmicort daily and takes Albuterol as needed. His dr told me to give him the Albuterol every 4 hours about 2 weeks ago when he was coughing, but it was a very congested cough. She said she wanted him on it anytime he was coughing, but my question is this, He is coughing a very dry but persistent cough now. Should I give him the albuterol every 4 hours again or just give him a treatment a couple of times a day? If you have an asthmatic child, how do you know when to give the treatments. I do not want to give them if they are not neccessary, but I want him to have them when he needs them.

A: I am a medical provider, and worked in critical-care and emergency medicine for about fifteen years, four of which was in pediatrics. Albuterol is a great drug for asthmatics. Kids handle it well (some may get a little hyper if too much is given, but hyper is better than coughing). Anyway, if he is having a dry cough, then it is even more important he use the albuterol now than when he has a wet cough. A wet cough indicates an infection, which can trigger his asthma; but it may not always be his asthma. A dry cough is more often the asthma. I don't know how much you have learned about asthma so far, but to make it as simple as I can, let me say this. Asthma is primarily a condition where the airways get narrow during an attack. Because of how the lungs work, this doesn't typically restrict how much air gets in, but how much air gets out. Eventually, the lungs have a lot of air, but it isn't able to get out; and likewise, it is now harder to get air in because of the trapped air. This is what an asthmatic cough is from. It is the body trying to force that trapped air out. While it could be related to an infection, albuterol in the dose prescribed is not likely to cause harm. Now, having said all this, go ahead and follow the doctors prescription. Give your son his treatments every four hours. Once his cough is easing, you can ease back on the treatments. Cheers!

Q: How come the nurse wanted to give EKG test for asthma?
I ran out of rescue inhalers and refused an EKG test for asthma, and ask for a prescription for albuteral and they wrote in my record patient refused medical exam and asking for medicine. I have never in my life before been offered an EKG test for asthma. Does that sound unusual, because normally they just listen to my lungs and give me a nebulizer treatment. No I was going to switch health care providers because I moved, and they scared me away so I guess I wont be going back to that place again.

A: Depending on how bad your asthma really is, Like some people have just some slight signs of it and other can go from mild, moderate, sever and then there's always the worst, acute asthma. If you have sever or acute asthma they will want to do an EKG, this is because there are more people then they will tell you that acutely die from really bad asthma attacks. Like that one athlete that was a trace runner for the olipices, she died in her sleep from and asthma attract. Your asthma can affect your heart as well as your lungs. Hope this helps you.
