Q: Asthma remedies?
Apart from medication what can I do to help my asthma that occurs when I have a common cold? (I know about coffee)

A: Enlist B6 in the battle. Knowledge of the effectiveness of vitamin B6 on asthma came about by accident. When researchers were studying the effects of the vitamin on those with sickle-cell anemia, they discovered that some members of the non-sickle-cell group also had a history of asthma. "When they took 50 milligrams of B6 daily, it reduced the severity of their asthma attacks," says internist Clayton L. Natta, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, who conducted the research. "Further study of asthmatics supported the effectiveness of B6" adds Dr. Natta. Megadoses of vitamin B6 can be toxic and are not recommended, but Dr. Natta says for an adult, "50 milligrams is a safe dose that is given medically all the time." (For complete safety, use B6 only with the approval and supervision of your doctor.) Take an antacid at bedtime. Going to sleep on a full stomach might also feed your asthma. "Asthma can be caused by stomach reflux," a condition in which acid backs up into your esophagus from your stomach. "Your stomach contents may leak out a little and drip down into your airway while you're lying down," says Dr. Creticos. "Prop your bed up and elevate the pillow to prevent the dripping, and take an antacid before bedtime to cut down on your stomach's acidity." Open your stride, not your mouth. When you open your mouth to gasp for air when exercising hard, you're drying the back of your throat and it becomes cool, which triggers your asthma. Keep your mouth closed and breathe through your nose. Swim to dampen your asthma. Swimming is the ideal exercise for asthmatics, says Dr. Ziering. Because of the high humidity, your mouth won't dry out. "But any sport that requires shorter bursts of exercise, such as baseball, tennis, and golf, is good." Use nonaspirin pain relievers. In medical terms, it's known as the "aspirin triad," and it consists of sinusitis/nasal polyps, asthma, and a sensitivity to aspirin. For some asthmatics, taking aspirin could have life-threatening consequences. "If you have sinusitis and nasal polyps and asthma, I wouldn't recommend any nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory like aspirin or ibuprofen because it could make your asthma worse or even kill you," says allergist Richard Lockey, M.D., director of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, who studied the link. This aspirin sensitivity could just suddenly develop, so it's best to stay clear of aspirin products altogether, says Dr. Friedlaender. "The problem doesn't happen when you use acetaminophen," he says.

Q: Are there any real asthma remedies out there that work?
I have asthma and have tried many remedies I dont drink milk or eat milk products Im now on steroid and have throat infections from over use Im running out of ideas.

A: asthma unfortunately cannot be cured. that's what my specialist told me. if you're on the inhaler steroids, you gotta rinse & gargle after inhaling to get rid of the excess medicine. this will lessen the throat infections. otherwise, depending on the severity of your asthma, you may ask your doctor to switch to a powder-based inhaler which also lessens the infections. these are products like Advair, etc

Q: What are some natural Asthma remedies and perventions?
How you deal if you have asthma?

A: Breath slowly and shallowly at the first signs of tightness in your chest.

Q: Are there any good home remedies for asthma out there?
I have pretty bad asthma and just had 2 visits to the E.R. last night. A variety of things triggered my attacks this time. Scary stuff. I am on a number of meds. for it, but wondering some good home remedies I could try. TY! Steering clear of stressful situations isn't going to happen...I have 7 children!! :0) No smoking here either. That would be the worst thing I could do!

A: Vacuum regularly - and keep dust down around the home - vacuum your bed and change the sheets regularly. House dust mites can be a problem. Don't smoke obviously, avoid passive smoking. Avoid all fumes especially diesel fumes. A minimalist look to you house - no dust collectors may be a good idea. Stress will trigger attacks - and it's scary as you say - so produces more stress. It's a vicious circle - try to break that vicious circle by doing something that helps you relax. Counselling or hypnotherapy may help.

Q: Are there any home remedies for asthma?
I would really like to know if there are any cures or home remedies for asthma because I can't stand taking inhalers anymore and I feel that asthma has ruined my life too much. So, please give me a serious answer and don't tell me that you don't know...I want to get an answer from someone who at least knows any remedy or cure for asthma. thank you.

A: There are no cures, but there are a few things you can do to reduce the risks and/or symptoms: -exercise regularly in order to expand your lungs **EDIT: of course follow your doctors guidelines about the exercise thing..don't overexert yourself if it puts you at the risk of an asthma attack..still, in the long run, exercising does improve lung capacity -keep a clean house and be sure to vaccuum (mainly because of dust) -Taking a hot shower to breath in the vapors helps me -Nebulizers can help you breath better, but make sure to get a good brand, otherwise it may lead to fungus growth, making your asthma even worse -wash your bedding regularly -don't let pets sleep with you or into the bedroom -wash your hands and face after working outside -don't keep too many stuffed animals in your bed (dust builds up on them) -don't smoke -A diet high in sucrose and refined carbohydrates (white flour based foods, supermarket snack foods, junk food etc) may aggravate pre-exisiting allergies and can cause all kinds of other problems, so these should be avoided and replaced with whole-food alternatives. -Reduce/avoid milk, dairy and wheat products, as these can cause mucous congestion in the body. -use an air cleaner -buy hypo-allergenic products as often as you can -avoid scented cleaners or air freshners -hard floors are better for asthma sufferers than carpets, which trap dust -of course, avoid allergens Obviously it would be very difficult to do everything I just listed, but just a few choice changes can cause a big improvement! hope these help :-)

Q: does anyone have any home remedies for asthma?
My 11 yr old son has asthma just wondering if anyone knows any home remedies? And i have taken him to the doctor he is on Ventolin..

A: This website might be useful to you as it gives some home remedies for asthma attacks. http://www.natural-homeremedies.com/homeremedies_asthma.htm

Q: Do you know any home remedies or tricks for asthma?
My daughter has severe asthma. This time of year it gets really bad. She is on Advair 2 times a day, Singulair once a day, Claritin once a day, Albuterol inhaler when needed, and an Albuterol Nebulizer 2 times a day. After all that she still has a lot of trouble off and on. Does anyone know any home remedies like I know coffee is supposed to help but it's hard to get her to drink it while it's hot like she's supposed to. I know obviously to take her to the ER when it's really bad, but if I can take care of it at home I want to try, b/c we have no insurance and her meds alone are 400.00 per month. Thanks for any ideas that work!

A: Here are a couple of things that I try for my kids and I. Put her in the bathroom with the hot water running full blast. Of course, sit with her to avoid a burn. The moisture can open her up. Also, use a cool mist humidifier ALL the time in whichever room of the house she's in. I assume you've been told the old stuff like, pets, smoke, carpets, curtains can all make it worse? I give my kids cool coffee with a little sugar, the caffiene is what's important so being hot isn't really THAT important. Also, if she's so bad that she's on all of this medicine ALL of the time I would file for Social Security Disability for her. She may not qualify for a cash payment but she can then qualify for Medicare or Medicaid. Asthma is a VERY expensive disease. Try finding a child's asthma summer camp that she can attend in your area. I found out alot of helpful info from the counselor's here in Az..

Q: Do you know of any asthma home remedies? ?
I have been having trouble with my asthma for about a week now, I'm on prednisone and using my rescue inhaler as needed. I have been drinking coffee and trying to get enough sleep and rest, but I am still having problems. Does anyone know of any home remedies that could speed up the process?

A: Sorry but when the asthma flares up it normally needs something stronger than home remedies. You are doing all the right things but maybe a little extra help is needed at this time. What dose of prednisolone are you on?, if it's still a low dose or maintenance dose, an increase may help. Do you have an infection and need an antibiotic? Basically if your asthma has been giving you discomfort for a week, it's time to visit the docs and find out why. Best of luck

Q: What are some good home remedies for asthma?
I am 99% sure I have asthma. A few minutes ago I started getting sharp pains in my chest, and now my breathing has worsened. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow to get confirmation that it actually is asthma (if not something else) But, as of right now I need something I can do for tonight that can help my breathing

A: Caffeine helps open the airways, so if you have pop or coffee or anything, you should drink that. As well, you should drink small sips of hot water. That's what the nurses used to have me do when I couldn't take any more albuterol but had problems. Just avoid going by anything that triggers it and stay calm. A nice conversation to get my mind off the pain also helps. Best of luck!

Q: I believe I am getting bronchitis or asthma. Are there any natural remedies for these?
My mom has had bronchitis lately and it turned into asthma. I believe that I have caught bronchitis from her. Are there any natural remedies that will help this? I have had the pneumonia shot so it should not develop into pneumonia. I absolutely hate being on antibiotics so any other options would be great. It is the first day so it should be very easily treated.

A: well it is a good thing that u got the pneumonia shot , but the reality is that just because you got the shot doesn't mean that you can get pneumonia and for asthma there's no natural cure for it. you really need to see a doc and get some chest x-rays

Q: Asthma issues any ideas for home remedies?
My husband is having major asthma problems... he'll go to the doctor tomorrow, but in the meantime, do you have any home remedies that may help? He's drinking green tea with honey and lemon right now. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

A: try ginger ale

Q: What are some natural remedies for asthma?
The cold weather is causing me bad bronchospasms. Its hard to suck in air. I have medicine but I don't like using my medicine any more than I need to. Is there anything that I can eat or drink regularly to help alleviate this? Not as a replacement for my medicine, just something to help it, like some kind of herbal tea, natural dietary supplement, etc. 10 points for your help! I appreciate it!

A: I'm an asthma sufferer just like you. Sometimes I find when I am having trouble breathing, I take a hot shower and the steam from the shower actually helps me breath better. Especially when I am not sick. When I am sick and I get bronchitis, I feel that the cold air helps me. There is no surefire way to know this is going to work until you try it. But it works wonders for me! Hope this helps you!

Q: What are some homeopathic remedies for severe asthma?
I know there are many home remedies, herbal and such that are said to cure certain illnesses. Does anyone have any ideas?

A: As an asthma educator, I do not recommend any of them. They are not scientiically proven. Any asthma specialist is going to have you follow the athma evidence based guidelines 3rd version (EPR⎯3) or GINA guidelines (international) to control your asthma. Know triggers and avoid them Use a controller med have an asthma action plan peak flow meter spacer rescue inhaler

Q: Does anyone have any natural or homeopathic remedies for asthma?
My doctor prescribed allergy medication for my asthma, and it is not very effective. My inhaler is empty. Does anyone know of any easy and effective ways to make breathing easier??

A: There are two popular Natural asthma treatments, one is from the Middle East and has been a primary treatment for asthma and allergies. A traditional extract blend taken with honey includes black cumin, chamomile, cinnamon, cloves, rosemary, sage, spearmint, thyme and other herbs. Natural asthma treatments have herbs that contain antioxidants, and Black cumin seed, rosemary and thyme are known to inhibit the contractions of tracheal smooth muscle that is stimulated by histamine and acetylcholine. In Asia one natural asthma cure is a blend known as Saiboku-To is used clinically for asthma treatment and contains 10 herbs like ginger, Korean ginseng, magnolia, Baikal and licorice. In Japan , 40 asthma patients were treated with Saiboku-To for six to 24 months, and all were able to greatly reduce their steroidal asthma medications.20 Saiboku-To have also been shown to inhibit lipoxygenase. When you're looking for Natural asthma treatments on the Internet, make sure you're not allergic to any of the natural ingredients themselves, which would defeat the purpose. Always take small doses and one at a time than recommended if you've never taken something before to make sure your body will not have an adverse affect from anything. Just because something is natural does not mean it can't be dangerous to you

Q: Any good home remedies for asthma?
I just found out I have asthma. My problem is that my enhaler I received does not seem to be working. I wake up at least three times in the middle of the night barely breathing, I feal as if I am slowly suffocating. It is so bad at times I almost can not control my bladder. Please Help.

A: It sounds like you are not appropriately medicated yet. You need more than just a rescue inhaler. (I'm assuming you're taking Albuterol and not buying Primatene mist from the store. Do NOT use Primatene or any other over the counter asthma remedy). Waking up 3 times a night is totally unacceptable. Make an appointment with your doctor and tell him/her exactly what is happening. You also need to be prescribed some sort of steroidal such as Flovent or Asthmacort. It is also possible that you have allergy induced asthma (do you have animals in the house) and would benefit from a daily allergy pill such as Singular. I have been asthmatic all of my life and was in your situation at one point. I just worked with my doctor until we got my prescriptions right. I'm fine now. Just get that appointment scheduled and get to a professional. Asthma attacks should be taken seriously and you should not have to spend one more night like this.
