Q: Can this stop me from becoming a police officer?
I am currently 17 and would like to apply to become a police officer when I come of age. I'm still thinking of going to universtity beforehand. The thing is, I get asthma and was wondering how badly it would affect my chances? I don't suffer with it terribly and by reading the UK police guidelines, it states that I may not be eligible... what do you think? I'm fit and don't tend to get asthma when I run, maybe if I'm ill but it doesn't affect me too badly. Opinions? I mean, there has to be police with asthma, right?

A: when you reach occupational health department ( UK ) you are required to do a lung function test, normally after your bleep test, you place your mouth round a large tube, a little bit smaller than a toilet roll and blow out, what you have to take in consideration's, have you had/ suffer from attacks on a regular basis, and can you reach the require standard on the bleep test, firstly though, speak to the recruitment department and go have have a lung function test with your doctor, you sound like you have a mild form of it, so don't worry, remember there are police officers that smoke and they pass it! good luck with your future application, keep update on the force you wish to join and if you need assistance in filling out the application go speak to you local police station or see www.intoblues.co.uk.

Q: Affordable private insurance (in Texas) for asthmatic/ADHD teenager.........................?
My son had CHIP insurance in Texas. It is similar to Medicaid, but NOT free!! When it was time to renew, we were denied for making too much money according to their guidelines. We tried looking for private ins but because he has asthma & ADHD they won't cover him for like 1-2 yrs, meaning they won't pay for any appts or Rx pertaining to those two "preexisting" conditions during that time frame. Those are the reason why I need ins in the first place. I don't know what to do? His Dr & I even switched him to a similar medication for his adhd so I can afford to pay for it out of pocket, which by the way does not work the same. It in turn is affecting his concentration at school & his grades are starting to become affected by all this. It's a huge domino effect! ANY suggestions will help!

A: health-quotes.talk4fun.net - here is my health insurance plan. As I remember they can provide such a service.

Q: FMLA question: My asthmatic son is sick...?
I just began a new job and the attendance policy is very, very strict: You cannot miss over 2 days within the first 6 months of employment. On the 3rd day, you will be terminated. Even worse, during the 6-week training, we have been told we have to be there every day. I am still in my 6-week training period so technically I cannot miss. My 2-year old has asthma. My husband took him to the doctor yesterday as he was constantly coughing and sniffling. The doctor advised him that he has "a cold" and to give him his inhaler medication every few hours to be sure his asthma is not aggravated. Well, I just finished giving him a treatment. He's breathing and getting air in, but it's getting shallow and he is running a slight fever. I'm giving the albuterol a chance to work first, but if his breathing does not improve in the next 30 minutes or so, I am taking him to the emergency room. (It's around 1:30.) Every time he gets a cold, his asthma acts up like this, and I do fear he might be getting pneumonia because of the fever. I fear retribution from my employer because I might have to take off work today. But, my son does have a serious, chronic condition (asthma), and I have been instructed to administer medicine to him every few hours. Is this something that should be protected under FMLA? Also, I did join a union when I came to work for this company. Should I contact them right away in the morning in addition to calling my employee because I am scared of being fired? I hate to sound stupid, but this is all new to me. I've never been in a union and I've never had to rely on FMLA to help me take off for my son. My previous job had a generous PTO policy so it was easy to take off when my son needed me and I never had to worry about FMLA. Unfortunately, I was laid off from that job recently and had to accept this job with the strict attendance guidelines. One more thing: My husband took off yesterday from his job because he's trying to help me. He could possibly take off again instead of me, but I fear that he will get in deep water with his boss if he takes off more than one day. He also had to change jobs recently and he just completed his 90-day intro period. I told my husband that it might be best for me to take off even with my strict attendance policy because I have a union backing me and he doesn't. What do you think about this? Thanks for your help. I'm scared of either me or my husband losing our jobs in this wretched economy. :-(

A: As others have noted you are not qualified for FMLA coverage because of the duration of employment requirements. You can take small comfort in the fact that even if you were qualified for FMLA protection, FMLA only provides for unpaid leaves of absence meaning even if you were covered your employer does not have to pay you while on leave and you could be forced into taking off weeks at a time as intermittent leave taken for the care of a child may be subject to an employer’s approval. It's for this reason that your husband taking time off under FMLA might not be a viable option anyway as it could leave you with an even greater loss in household income. It is highly unlikely that your union can do anything to protect you. Compliance with an employer's attendance policy is not typically something that a labor union can contest. In addition most unions have a probationary period (typically 30 days) and may not act on your behalf until you are past the probationary period. Unfortunately you don't have a lot of options but you and your husband may want to consider having him take leave under FMLA or under whatever vacation days he has accrued or some combination thereof to attend to your child while you are in the training period but there is always a risk that he will be terminated sometime after he returns to work.

Q: What immediate action that HongKong government should take to improve the air quality,do it but not saying it?
I think it has been a matter of public concern on air pollution of Hong Kong that caused a lot of health problem regardless what they ignored the WHO criticized that Hong Kong government didn't do anything to pin point the air pollution. I would like to post the real-time website prepared by A. Hedley, a well-known professor in (incumbent department head) Faculty of Medicine, university of Hong Kong. Those relevant data including the particulates of air in Hong Kong exceeded four times of the WHO's guidelines and there were recorded with 7 million visits for the treatments of air pollution caused diseases in 2007, such as asthma, lungs and heart etc. There is another excellent Y/A answer by Afonse.R described the Hong Kong polluted air is unacceptable with many quoted facts about the worst Hong Kong environment for pursuing the green living is impossible. I think Hong Kong government must try to do something pertaining to the European Kyoto Protocol satandard. However, Hong Kong government want the public to pay for it as what the South China Morning Post published articles regarding there are 100,000 are involved the living cage life style. http://www.scmp.com/portal/site/SCMP/ According to the social services department latest information there are two millions out of the total seven millions population are living under the poverty line, and 200,000 are living as described as a dog's life. How can they live in a windowless 60 sq ft room with room temperature recorded as 37.4 degree inside. I think (many scholars and economists suggested) before the HK government start any action to solve the air pollution problem that cost a hell lot of money must take a more reasonable economic wise step first to trim the oversized civic body as well as axe the overall overpaid civil servants salaries by at least from 6% to as much as 60%. For instance, the newly appointed Hong Kong Monetary Authority chief Norman Chan is boasted that his salary is axed 32% in comparison to the former chief (still incumbent till October this year) Joseph Yam who made HK $10.3 million per year. He is still the highest pay banker in this world, and will be making HK $7.5 millions each year for five consecutive years. Alan Greenspan, the greatest banker in the US was making equivalent to HK $1.38 millions each year, Timothy Geitherin (incumbent financial chief of the US Treasury) is making less than equivalent to HK $2.5 millions per year. It is rumoured that those few appear on TV weather report officers for HK government is making more than the US president, Barack Obama because of their extra high housing allowance and civil servant benefits. It is better to do the Hong Kong civil servants cleansing and save some money before to do improve the air quality. http://147.8.71.207/pollution/home1.php http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081003225223AAVkQZU

A: There are countries who will never sign the agreement, China is one, and the largest polluter too. They are building new coal-fired electric plants at an alarming rate, and the plants are big polluters. I doubt India will sign. India is also a major polluter. And when more countries find out what it will cost, they won't either. It's wrong, I know, but true.
