Q: What over-the-counter medication is there to help people who have slight asthma with allergies?
Sometimes I have slight asthma, but I believe that much of it is related to my allergy problem with mold, mildew, dust, weeds, etc. I have to take benadryl about everyday, and I sometimes get congestion in my sinuses and chest. Does decongestant help with preventing asthma at all? I have an inhaler available to take as needed, but don't usually have very bad symptoms. It seems to come and go. Is this fairly normal?

A: It's pretty normal for some people. Claritin helps me, but i take Singulair with it during harvest season, when my allergies get really bad. For a very, very mild asthma attack, coffee can sometimes help. Check with your doctor before doing this, but my doctor said i could take 2 Claritin - 1 in the morning, 1 at night to help with allergies.

Q: Asthma and allergy question ? 10 points help please !
Well for a couple weeks now , Probably about maybe even a month in a half , My allergys have been acting up horribly ! All the time I have been sick , I couldn't go anywhere without getting sick ! It was bad , They haven't been like this before or anything . But starting yesterday Ive started to have that asthma cough . Like I couldnt laugh without having that or anything . I would have to keep clearing my throat , Im pretty sure its my asthma but why is it just acting up now ? I was told when I was younger I had a slight case of it , They gave me a inhaler and everything which didnt work very good . But today it started acting up again , Soon as I woke up continuing all day long . So one of my friends also has an inhaler and he let me use it and two puffs and all of it went away ! My other inhaler didnt do that ? Do you think I should go get allergy shots to see what im allergic to or not . And also ask them about a inhaler . But my asthma doesnt always act up . Thank you !

A: you should try using a neti pot to irrigate your sinus cavities; i had similar problem and this was recommended to me. it works great, sounds gross but it's really easy to do. get a neti pot at walgreens, cvs, and all health food stores carry them, they are about $15.00 but you use them over and over with a little non-iodized salt to make a mild saline solution with warm water. lean over the sink and put the spout in one nostril with half the solution then do the other side. breath thru your mouth while you do this. when you're done blow your nose really good, you'll be surprised at what comes out. in the beginning do this two times daily and as your symptoms lessen drop back to once a day. i know this will help you; you may not even need the inhaler!

Q: Does asthma usually give flemmy cough and blocked nose, or is this more likely to be an allergy?
I've been coughing for the past 11 days and it's quite flemmy and 'hoarse' - although its not REALLY bothering me, I mean. My mother believes it is asthma, although I have no tightness in the chest. NB: Please don't -try- to be funny and mention 'Swine flu' - i've heard it before.... didn't laugh.

A: No, my son has asthma and his cough is a hard dry cough with trouble catching breath in between coughs. No phlegm.

Q: Is asthma a disease or an allergy ? If it is an allergy then why it is heridetary. Your views please.?
Often doctors say that asthma is nothing but an allergy. But in real life if you see it is a disease which like diabetes comes from parents to their children.

A: Asthma is a respiratory disease. People with asthma often also have allergies. Yes, it is hereditary, but so are allergies. Allergies and asthma can both be very serious medical concerns.

Q: can i take singular for asthma and take claritin and lohist -d for allergy at the same time?

Q: How do I manage asthma and allergies?
I have always had asthma that is agrivated when I get sick. Well yesterday I went to the doctor because I was certain I had pneumonia. However, the doctor told me that it is my asthma and it was triggered by allergies. I never want to feel this way again, especially without infection. Does anyone know a good way to manage allergies and asthma without using drugs that make you tired (benedryl) or have horrible side effects (prednisone)? Thank you all.

A: Try Zyrtec - I am allergic is anything that blooms, most animals with fur, dust, dust mites....the list goes on and on! My asthma, which has been dormant for 15 years, popped back up a few months ago due to allergies. Don't use Zyrtec-D - I have not had positive experiences with that. Also, try using Singulair. It is for both allergies and asthma and you take it at night. Try NeilMed's Sinus Rinse. It's over-the-counter and is at any drugstore. It feel weird to do, but it flushes out your sinuses which means it flushes out the allergens. Also, for the asthma, you may consider something like Broncaid or and inhaler as a short term solution. Also, examine your surroundings. Have you moved? Have you aquired a new pet or have you been around a new pet? When was the last time the filter on your HVAC system was changed? Use a specific allergen-filter to help. Good luck - I know exactly how you feel!

Q: Allergy and asthma question?
Does anyone know how allergies and asthma are affected in the Western United States? I currently live in Illinois where there are many triggers. I am wondering how the climate, area, and elevation of states like Idaho, Montana, and Utah would affect me.

A: This year, I had worse allergies than last year here in Idaho. My allergies this year had developed into asthma...the pollen this year was horrible at least where I live here.

Q: any medium to large dogs suitable for asthma/allergy sufferer (not a Labradoodle) as they look too girly !?

A: You should make sure you spend some time with the dog before you decide on buying it. While many dogs are supposedly "hypoallergenic," no dog is really fully hypoallergenic. It is not the fur of dogs that causes allergies, but dander. You can keep this to a minimum by bathing/grooming frequently, but there are no gaurantees that the dog will never give you allergic symptoms. The only way you can tell is by spending time with the dog. If you get symptoms, you shouldn't buy it. Q: I am sick of taking steroid inhalers for severe persistant asthma, what happens if you just stop?
I have had asthma/allergies all my life. Been taking high dose inhalers 500/50 of Advair for years along with several times of taking prednisone pills.

A: You can not just stop taking steroids. You have to slowly come down on the dose over a few weeks. And if your asthma is that bad, and you were to stop taking the steroids and the advair, you could possibly die from an attack.

Q: Can i get into the army with allergy induced asthma.?
Ive got only very mild asthma

A: Yes, provided it does not get worse. My roomie got an honorable discharge because her asthma got a lot worse during her time at boot camp.

Q: What is a good non-drowsy allergy medicine for someone who is allergic to almost everything?
My boyfriend has had asthma and allergies since he was a kid, and I hate seeing him sniffle and snort and have trouble breathing. He treats the asthma and tries to treat the allergies but they still bother him. Any suggestions for a good medicine he can try? He has seasonal allergies as well as specific allergies ( smoke, cigarettes, cats, etc.) He stays as far from each one as possible.

A: I am in the same boat as your bf, with the asthma and allergies. I would recommend trying Claritin-D which is an over the counter medicine that works really well. The D is important. That stands for decongestant which will help with the sniffles and any coughing. If you can get a prescription, try Clarinex or Zyrtec, but you will need to add your own decongestant I don't believe they come in -D form. All the best!
