Q: Can asthma be deteced prior to birth?
i am doing a school project about asthma, here are some other ?'s
how often does asthma occur in the population
what is the cause of asthma
what type of people usually have asthma
what is the treatment for asthma
also if anyone has any cool facts that would be awesome too.
thanks so much for your help!!
A: I haven't heard of any clinically proven methods to detect asthma prior to birth. There is really no way to determine if YOU ARE GOING TO DEVELOP asthma. There are factors that PREDISPOSE a person to develop asthma, the more of the factors you have, the more the risk.
First, is genetic. If your family has a history of atopy (relating to, or caused by a hereditary predisposition toward developing certain hypersensitivity reactions) such as allergies, skin asthma or asthma.
Second factor is the environment exposure to dusts, allergens, smoke and other irritants. These may be from your place of work, example, if you work in a mine or is exposed to silica, etc.
Third factor is the intake of drugs. Some drugs prescreibed for other diseases may actually trigger asthma (drug-induced asthma), so it is also important to note any medications being taken by a person).
The main culprit for asthma is actually hyperreactivity of the person's airways which leads to inflammation of the airways. Some people do not actually have clinical manifestations even though the airway inflammation is present.
There is also one form of asthma where the clinical manifestation is coughing instead of wheezing. This is called cough-variant asthma.
Asthma is not cured, it is managed. Treatment for asthma depends on what stage a person is in. There is a grading of the severity. Usual medications prescribed are beta 2 agonist and steroids. These medications have side effects but the side effects outweigh the risk of dying from asthma (if severe). Avoiding the asthma trigger is also important.

A: it is an anti- tuberculosis drug
Q: Uh-oh... I just did a nebulizer treatment and realized that it was EXPIRED!!
Hi, I'm actually about 3/4 of the way through an asthma treatment (DuoNeb, which is Albuterol and Atrovent all in 1), and it expired 3 months ago. It is the only stuff I have, and it has no refills because I rarely need to use it.
Is it alright or what?
A: I work in a Doctor's office, and as we tell our patients, you should not use anything that is expired because the effectiveness of the medication is probably gone. Since it expired 3 months ago and you are 3/4 the way through it; you should finish the treatment. If your symptoms don't get any better within the same amount of time they usually do, either call your Physician through their after hour exchange or go to the E.R. People always complain about the time spent/wasted and the cost of the E.R., but I would never put a cost on my life. (Not trying to be harsh.) If the treatment does help, wonderful. But you should call your Physician to get a refill on the nebulizer as soon as possible. Hope this helps.
Q: Requested a Breathalyzer but was forced to give blood at a Hospital?
I got pulled over for speeding by CHP in California on Memorial day weekend. I was not speeding and the CHP lady said I was going 95mpg. She had not evidence or clock, or electrical device to prove it. I was never read my rights. Shortly after I was asked if I had drank liquor. I said yes about 2 beers. I refused the FST and requested to take a breathalyzer. After 35 - 45 min, while being handcuffed. I started having a uncomfortable panic attack in the vehicle. The officer said she did not have a breathalyzer and now she said her back up didn't either. Thats BS I think because its a Holiday weekend at 10:30 at night. Anyhow I was unwillingly brought to the hospital and forced a asthma treatment. After recieving service which I didn't want. The police said now I was incapable of taking a breath test. I said but I requested it. Anyhow long story short I was forced to give blood. At jail I was not given the chance to test my blood again or take a breathalyzer.
A: It is not your request that is honored, it is the Officers.
Q: ASTHMA HELP!!, PLEASE? BEST ANSWER 10 POINTS!?
i am a 14 year old girl and i think i may have asthma as when i excercise my chest starts to hurt after about 10 minutes then once i have exercised i feel find until about 3 hours later when my chest starts to hurt. i have heard that coughing could also be a sign. i cough quite a bit and my parents say i cough during the night too.
COULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME ON:
THE SIGNS OF ASTHMA
DIAGNOSIS OF ASTHMA
TREATMENT
AND THE CAUSES,
i really want to know if I have asthma because in science we have been givin a site to log onto about the human body and after about 25 questions they said i could suffer from asthma and i have been on the GMTV website and i said i could have it to
PLEASE HELP ME!
ALSO WHAT TYPES OF ASTHMA ARE THERE?
A: There's only one type of asthma, as I'm aware of.
Symptoms;
Coughing - it's other worse at night.
Difficulty with breathing - Especially in humid weather, I find, and also when it's cold, I find I begin to find it harder to breathe then as well..
Wheezing - especially after exercising, and also humid weather.
Frequent colds progressing into chest infections, or staying for a long time - This year, I've had 4 colds, 2 of which became chest infections which were treated with antibiotics and one which stayed for a long time.
Asthma can be controlled, with inhalers.
Purple/Brown: Preventative, morning and night, to ~prevent the symptoms.
Blue: Reliever, to immediately relieve symptoms.
I used to take a tablet called Montelukast, as opposed to my inhalers, they DID help my asthma, but they made me, personally (so don't let this put you off) throw up, and my doctor decided it was better for me to stay on the inhalers instead.
Triggers (these cause your asthma to be more prevalent, and possibly worsen symptoms) can be many different things; I find that pollen, sudden weather changes, humidity and smoke really set off my asthma, as well as my allergies to dogs, cats, bananas and grass.
You may find that a visit to your doctor can really help you in the diagnosis and treatment of asthma. :)
Good Luck!

Q: Asthma question and Dust in Room?
My room is the dustiest room in the house. I remember wiping my table clean with a wet cloth and noticing a thick coat of dust on it again after a few weeks. For the past year now, I've been coughing regularly, usually right after I wake, and it get's better by the late afternoon. It feels like by lungs are coated in dust and I'm coughing the dust out. I believe the cause of my 'asthma' is the great amounts of dust in my room. I'm not sure where the dust is really coming from, but I guess it would be coming from the air condition/heating vent in my room.
Questions:
How do they test you to see if you have asthma?
Treatment (how does inhaler work)?
Where does all the dust in my room come from?
A: The person who answered above me is right. You could have allergies instead.... but almost anyone that I know would cough if there is too much dust around. My child has neither asthma nor allergies, but when we are in a unkept house we cough and cough and cough. The person who answered previously said that he/she had asthma since birth.... so he/she can vouch for me that if you truly had asthma that you would not be able to find relief unless you took an inhaler. Asthma is when the smooth muscles around your airways become tight and make the diameter of your airways smaller. This makes airflow decrease and because of the smaller diameter you will usually have wheezing. So if you are only experiencing this around your dusty room and your symptoms are self-relieved then you probably don't have asthma
Q: Symbicort or Advair? For asthma.?
Which one of these drugs is more superior for the treatment of asthma and how do they both work? Thanks.
A: They both work the same. Although Sybicort claims to have a faster onset.
They Both contain a Long acting bronchodilator beta agonist that lasts for up to 12 hours to treat bronchial smooth muscle constriction.
They also both contain a corticosteroid to treat airway inflammation.
Advair = salmeterol (serevent) and Fluticasone (Flovent)
Comes in strengths of 500/50, 250/50, 100/50
Symbicort = formoterol (Foradil) and Budesenide (Pulmicort)
Comes in strengths of 80/4.5, 160/4.5
They are both prescribed the same, One inhalation twice a day 12 hours apart.
Q: Exercise Induced Asthma?
Is there a cure for this type of asthma? Treatments?
A: There is no cure for EIA. Your doctor will prescribe an albuterol inhaler for you to use 10-15 minutes before the start of an exercise. If your condition is persistent, then you will get a steroid inhaler as well. Try breathing through your nose when you exercise. And also breathe though a scarf when exercising in cold weather.
When you are exercising, how do you breathe?? If you keep inhaling through your mouth, chances are you will cough because of the cold air even if you don't have asthma.. If you have an albuterol/salbutamol inhaler with you, use it 10-15 mins before the start of an activity. If symptoms worsen or if you found yourself wheezing, then please consult a respiratory specialist to do a specialized testing for you to check whether you are suffering from exercise induced bronchoconstriction.. (you will be asked to run on a treadmill for 8 minutes and you cannot have control of the speed & elevation). After running, you will do a spirometry test in intervals (5, 10, 15, 20 minutes & post bronchodilator).. If your readings fall below 15%, your test is positive..
HTH.. :-)
