Q: Vocal cord problem, a symptom of asthma?
I recently had a pulmonary function test and I was told that a problem with my vocal cords was detected. I knew I already have asthma, but is the vocal cord problem probably related to the asthma?
A: There are vocal cord problems independent of asthma, sometimes caused by excessive use of the vocals (shouting too loud and too often) or as complications to surgery.
And then, asthma can cause vocal troubles. If you have both and roughly around the same time, probably not coincidental is it? If you have both at present, highly likely the vocal cord problem was caused by your asthma.
Q: How do you survive with asthma?
I had just found out i have been having asthma symptoms. How do i breath better? even thought my doctore seem to give me lots of precripstion still im not breathing that good, i heard it also have somehting to do wih your diet, excersise and stuff like that. Please help me because i have never experience asthma, so if you have please give me some tip on how to breath better. thank you for breathing
A: I have asthma too, but the doctor gave me a turbo-haler and I rarely have problems now. If you can try to keep a record of the times its bad as we all have different triggers, I get worse when stressed but many can by smoke, perfume, dust or animal hair.
Q: I cough when I am outside in cold temps. Could this be a symptom of asthma?
A: Yes it can!
Q: Can constant coughing be a symptom of asthma? ?
My father has asthma. It is more obvious in cold weather and it disappeared totally when he lived for 3 years in a country closer to the equator.
I have started coughing constantly in the last 2 years since I moved from the mild climate of NZ to the colder climate of Canada.
I was never bothered by this in NZ, because the weather there is mild all year round
I am constantly coughing, and it is worse when I am breathing cold air or drinking cold liquids from the fridge. I actually do prefer to drink drinks at room temperature.
I have had 2 wheezing episodes last year (in Canada) where I was unable to breathe after coughing, and could not catch my breath. I was prescribed a puffer by the doctor.
Do you think it could be asthma?
I did a spirometer test last year - I think that is the blowing test to test lung capacity - and it was not good. I certainly could not blow out for as long as they wanted me to.
A: It may be cough equivalent asthma in which coughing is the most prominant symptom. Get a Xray Chest PAV and spirometry done to confirm the diagnosis of asthma.
Spirometry should include both pre and post drug (bronchodilator) test , to see reversibility in FEV1. Consult a asthma specialist.
Q: Would Eating Too Many Tomatoes trigger your asthma?
when my husband eats a lot of raw tomatos, his asthma symptoms seem to accelerate, i was wondering if this is because a chemical in the tomato?
A: YES!
cow's milk, nuts, chocolate, shellfish, strawberries and tomatoes are all triggers for asthma.
Q: What can happen if Asthma goes untreated?
I have a friend who has all the symptoms of Asthma but his mom won't let him get an inhaler because she doesn't believe he has it and she doesn't want to "waste" money. What happens if he doesn't get help? How do I not only convince his mom that he has it but also that it is a serious medical condition? And if I can't convince her what next?
A: well many of the statement up to now are reasonable but also somewhat inaccurate. asthma can kill, that is known, however not all attacks are deadly. on the other hand a serious asthma attack may not even respond to inhaled bronchodilators necessitating immediate emergency room intervention. enough on that end of it. you are right, asthma is a serious syndrome.
now to analyze your question a little: you give no history, no age, and no factual data to confirm a diagnosis. it would be nice to have detailed what you mean by "symptoms of asthma". asthma doesnt have symptoms (not like flu, or a cold, or even many respiratory infections). when a person does have an attack they usually have audible wheezing, may feel short of breath, and experience chest discomfort, that is a basic asthma attack. you mention none of this. nor do you confirm under what conditions or environment triggers attacks. asthma doesnt just happen all the time and attacks are usually short lived, they come, they go, and unless there is an underlying infection they dont linger for days and have symptoms. in general medical circles the saying is "asthma is only asthma when you have it". the diagnosis requires a few specific tests, coupled with a significant medical history, and a physical. its possible he is having allergic responses which mimic asthma like symptoms, but are treated much the same way with bronchodilators, steroids, possible antibiotics, and allergy prevention measures.
asthma is not a common childhood illness although in the last two decades the incidence of diagnosis has been on the increase. check with CDC in atlanta, or NIOSH in washington DC to confirm more detail. so dont get you panties in a wad over this. mom is likely not abusing her son as you allude to. however if the child is begging to see a doctor, has serious dietary, pshychologic, and emotional issues then by all means inform social services. maybe someone would need to investigate the mothers ability to bring son to a doctor and/or ability to pay.
Q: Exactly how hard is it to get an asthma waiver approved for the Marine Corps?
My last symptoms of asthma were in fact after my 13th birthday, unfortunately. And what can i do to increase my chances of getting the waiver approved?
seeing as my asthma is absolutely gone, and i mean gone, i would lie, but i am still afraid of somehow getting caught.
A: I had asthma when I was younger and got in the Marines. Got my doctor to say it was croup... No asthma waivers (at least then)! Good luck!
Q: Does the excedrine migraine pill cause permenant asthma as a side effect?
I took this pill before football several times a week because it blocked out all pain. I reacted to it and my face swelled up and I had symptoms of asthma. I know that it lists asthma as a side effect but is the a permenant effect. This is a serious question and I am really worried.
A: It sounds like you might be allergic to one of the ingredients in the drug. An allergy would cause those types of symptoms. Excedrin's main ingredients are aspirin, tylenol, and caffeine.
Another option might be that the caffeine in the pill caused your heart rate and breathing to get too fast so you felt those kind of symptoms.
I personally take Midrin for my migraines now instead of Excedrin because I had some negative side effects from Excedrin Migraine, too. Check out http://midrin.org and see if your doctor wants to prescribe it for you. It isn't that expensive either.
Q: My son was up all night with a croupy cough, he also has asthma. Is it asthma or something else?
I gave him a breathing treatment in the middle of the night and it seemed to help. Is a croupy cough ever an asthma symptom? Does anyone have any advice or information on what could cause this? In previous attacks he has never had a cough like this. Any help is appreciated.
He is only four so this really panics him.
A: asthma can be very different in children than in adults and can be hard to differentiate what symptoms are what. I grew up in a family that has asthma and you know you cant take these things lightly. If your unsure of what this may be take him to a doctor. He may have a fluid buildup in his lungs or something. Or he could have a respiratory infection that could be aggrevating his asthma. In this case, breathing treatments will only help his asthma symptoms but not take care of what is causing the cough in the first place. The sooner you take your son to a doctor the sooner he will get better. If it is an infection, it will only get worse with time.
Hope he gets better!!
Q: is it a symptom of asthma? or I'm perfectly fine?
i have posted a question previously, related to heath problems that I'm facing.
i have this problem , where i gasp for air, when i walk or cycle , even if i do it slowly. my friends could just hear me breathing so loud and they said that its sounds like, i am having difficulty to breath( like why are you breathing like that, its so loud) . my friends don't breath like that when they cycle.
and when i exhale, my whole body hurts, especially my back . this only happens when i do something(cycling, lifting something, walking).
when I'm just relaxed and after that,if i take a deep breath, the left side of my chest will hurt so much, and i need to breath and have to force myself to exhale more, and the pain will go away.
is there anything wrong with me? recently, i noticed that, after exercising, there's some mucus coming out of my nose, and its very watery. I usually experience this, after cycling, or any other exercise. I don't have cold or sinus. do all this show any problem ?
A: First of all you need to know that any asthma or breathing difficulties place a HUGE strain on the heart. Asthma is not usually associated with pain in the chest when breathing in or out. It sounds to me like you have a chest infection, pneumonia or bacterial pluerisy. Please do not mess around with your lungs, as this can cause long term, irreversible damage. Of course, you need to see your doctor and tell him or her of all your symptoms. Sounds like you are having a wheeze, which is a sound coming from the bronchial tubes when you breathe out and this is normal for an asthmatic or someone with a lung disorder. So the pain in your chest is an indication of an infection and please see your doctor. You may need to have an x-ray or an asthma test but please go and get it sorted. When I was 22 it really hurt my chest when I exhaled and I got really ill. I went to a doctor and I had bacterial pleurisy. During a course of anti-biotics I started coughing all the time and this was the infection loosening and coming up. OOh it was just awful. But you do need to be diagnosed for this and for possible asthma and if it is asthma then you will be given preventative and reliever asthma medications. Do not mess around with this as it is serious.
Q: How to help control asthma attacks..?
My fiancee has asthma attacks pretty regularly. We're getting married soon and I want to know what kinds of things I can do to make our home free of the things that cause asthma attacks. I know the basics like dust and smoke, but should we get a humidifier or are there products out there to help ease asthma symptoms? He takes meds but I just want to know what kinds of things other people have done to make it a little better!
Thanks!
They keep changing his meds because he gets them so often and they haven't been able to find something that works really well for him! So he's trying to get it under control. That's why I want to know what we can do at home to make it better!
A: No humidifier! The less humidity the better. That is why so many asthmatics move to the SOUTHWEST like Arizona and New Mexico. Pets, dust, mowing the lawn are possible triggers.
Change the filters in the furnace and AC VERY OFTEN. Don't use spray chemicals to clean your house. Change the sheets on the bed every other night with fresh clean sheets. (dust and dust mites love your bed too) Curtains, drapes and moldings should be dusted when hubby is not home and do this often. Shades might be a wiser choice and easier to keep clean and dust free. Congrats and good luck with your marriage!
Q: How do i know if the colds/coughs my 3 yr old kid has regularly relate to asthma?
Coughs & cold return on a monthly basis & remain for more than 2 weeks at a stretch. We make sure she's not on chocolates & cold drinks; but still, she's free from these cold cycles only during the summer months. The coughs are worse during nights & early mornings. Are these symptoms of asthma?
A: Possibly. I'd speak to your doctor about her. In most cases, a physician can diagnose asthma on the basis of typical findings in a patient's clinical history and examination. Asthma is strongly suspected if a patient suffers from eczema or other allergic conditions—suggesting a general atopic constitution—or has a family history of asthma. While measurement of airway function is possible for adults, most new cases are diagnosed in children who are unable to perform such tests. Diagnosis in children is based on a careful compilation and analysis of the patient's medical history and subsequent improvement with an inhaled bronchodilator medication. There may well be other causes for your daughters condition.
Best wishes to her and to you and I hope they find the causes of the problem
Q: can you have asthma without being weasy?
I'm a Young girl with all the symptoms of asthma except for wease. I keep asking people but they don't seem to answer. I am not fat (I'm actually rather skinny) and I'm very scared. I've already had about 3 asthma attacks but now i have had a blood test to check if i have asthma but the results haven't came back yet so please answer!
A: Hi,
Absolutely, asthma can present without wheeze.
There's a totally separate entity of asthma called the cough variant asthma which presents solely as cough.
You actually need to visit a Pulmonologist who would advice a chest xray and a pulmonary function test which are the minimum basic investigations that need to be done before labelling one as asthma.
